Make your fresh cut flowers last longer.

Certain varieties of cut flowers last longer than others. Carnations, for example, can remain vibrant for long periods of time. Roses have a shorter vase life, but are prized for their special and delicate beauty. When buying flowers, be sure to ask your florist how long you should expect your arrangement to last. Whatever variety you choose, a little care will go a long way to keep your blossoms looking fresh longer.
Flower Tips & Information
Flowers: How to Lengthen the Life of Your Arrangement
A little extra care can make a big difference for any size flower arrangement or fresh flower bouquet. Most floral arrangements last 4-7 days or longer, depending on the flowers used and the care they receive.

For floral arrangements:
Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower food provided by your florist. Flower foods make flowers last longer but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Most packets are to be mixed with either a pint or a quart of water. Flower foods should not be diluted with more water than is specified on the packet. If the flower food solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely with properly mixed flower food solution. If possible, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Be sure to use a sharp knife or clippers that will not crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into solution. Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate.) Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.

For loose bunches or boxed flowers:
Keep your flowers in a cool place until you can get them in a flower food solution. Do not forget how important it is to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Fill a clean (washed with a detergent or antibacterial cleaning solution), deep vase with water and add a flower food from your florist. Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial microbial growth that may limit water uptake by the flower. Re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Place the flowers in the vase solution you have prepared.

If you purchase loose flowers for your own arrangements you should also consider these tips:
When selecting flowers, look for flowers with upright, firm petals and buds beginning to open. Yellow, spotted or drooping leaves are signs of age. When using woody stems and branches (such as quince, forsythia or lilac), cut the stem with sharp pruning shears. Place them in warm water containing fresh flower food to promote flower opening.

Plant Care Tips: Green Thumb Not Required

Not only are green and flowering plants a great enhancement to any home or office decor, they are also beneficial to your health. New behavioral research from Rutgers demonstrates that flowers ease depression, inspire social networking and refresh memory as we age. The results of a study by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) show that common houseplants are powerful, natural air cleaners - all the more reason why you want to keep your plants healthy with the proper care. Most plants come with care instructions specified for the type of plant.

Keep plants in medium-light locations - out of direct sunlight:
Natural light is best, but some plants can also thrive in office fluorescent light. Most flowering potted plants should be placed in areas with the most light in order to maintain good flower color and promote the maximum number of flowers to open. Foliage plants will do well under lower light levels and can be placed in areas providing reduced light.

Plant soil should be kept moist at all times:
Plants should not be allowed to dry out or wilt. Be careful to avoid over watering - do not allow plants to stand in water. Avoid wetting plant leaves.

Avoid excessive heat or cold:
Plants should be kept in a cool spot (between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit) for best performance. They should be kept away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans or on top of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes plants to dehydrate.)

Unique Flower Ideas

Many Americans are slowing down and staying home in record numbers. Experts have named this phenomenon "downshifting." As people seek more time in their havens, atmosphere is becoming increasingly important. Use the following unique ideas from the Society of American Florists to brighten your home, room by room, with flowers.

Entranceway or Foyer
Attach small vases containing short stems of fresh flowers to a pre-made wreath and hang it on your front door to welcome guests. Make a first impression with a large, abundant arrangement. Create a focal point with a piece of artwork on a pedestal draped with a garland and flowers. For a friendly look, place a basket with a garden bouquet on the entry table.

Dining Room
For an easy, elegant table decoration set a series of alternating crystal vases and candles on a fabric runner. Place fresh flowers in each of the vases and surround them with greenery. Individual flowers are perfect at place settings or attached to name cards. Blending with the casual atmosphere of modern home entertaining, this centerpiece is sure to dazzle guests during afternoon brunch or informal dinners. The candles provide a refreshing combination using the elegance of flowers with the ambience of candlelight. Flowers featured: Lilies, carnations, spray roses, alstroemeria, daisy chrysanthemums, solidaster, monte casino.

Living Room
Take your favorite vase, treasured antique bowl or silver pitcher to your florist for a custom-designed arrangement. Float two or three blooms, such as gardenias or gerbera daisies in a favorite crystal bowl. Add a floating candle or two for a glowing evening effect.

Family Room
In the summer when the fireplace isn't being used, brighten the hearth with an abundant assortment of seasonal flowers. Continue the theme by placing a few of the same flowers on the mantle next to those family photos.

Kitchen
Trim a windowsill with a collection of terra cotta pots, using a combination of herbs and sun-loving plants like kalanchoe, African violets or primroses. Old water pitchers, antique teapots, classic urns or even tattered clay pots make fascinating containers for a casually placed flower arrangement. Loosely clustered to give the look of a freshly cut garden bouquet, this hand-tied design adorns a favorite water pitcher. The complementary flowers and colors brighten any part of the house, from the kitchen to the family room to the bedroom. Flowers featured: Alstroemeria, carnations, freesia, roses, bouvardia, delphinium, stock, Star of Bethlehem, asters, statice.

Bedroom
Tea roses, freesias, peonies, lilac and lilies, are all deliciously fragrant choices for a bud vase on your nightstand.

Guest Bedroom
A bud vase with a simple cluster of flowers hidden in the center of a clear bubble bowl filled with potpourri is the perfect way to welcome a guest. Try floating rose petals in a special bath to spoil a friend!

Home Office
Give yourself a "nature break" by keeping a flowering or green plant next to your computer station or fax machine.
